Our Testing Methodology
How we test, rate, and review residential water systems. Every product goes through our rigorous 4-phase evaluation process.

The Four Phases of Testing
Every product we review goes through this comprehensive evaluation process before we publish our findings.
Performance Verification
We test claims against NSF/ANSI standards. Does a filter actually remove 99% of lead? Does an AWG actually produce 5 gallons in 40% humidity? We use calibrated meters and lab analysis to verify output quality and quantity.
Total Cost of Ownership
Sticker price is only half the story. We calculate the 'Real 5-Year Cost' which includes filter replacements, electricity consumption (verified with kilowatt meters), and maintenance supplies.
Usability & Installation
Our reviewers install the units themselves. We evaluate the clarity of manuals, the quality of included hardware, noise levels in decibels, and the ease of routine maintenance like filter changes.
The Hydrology Score
Our final 1-10 rating is a weighted average based on objective measurements and real-world performance testing over extended periods.
Certifications We Verify
We check for these industry-standard certifications when evaluating water treatment products.
NSF/ANSI 42
Aesthetic effects (chlorine, taste, odor)
NSF/ANSI 53
Health effects (lead, cysts, VOCs)
NSF/ANSI 58
Reverse osmosis systems
NSF/ANSI 401
Emerging contaminants
How We Calculate Our Rating
Our 1-10 rating isn't subjective—it's a weighted average of four key performance areas. This ensures consistency across all our reviews.
