Never Add Untreated Tap Water to a Fish Tank
Municipal tap water contains chlorine and chloramine at levels that are immediately lethal to fish. Chloramine, unlike chlorine, does not dissipate by sitting out — it requires chemical dechlorination. Always test your source water and use appropriate water conditioners before adding to any aquarium.
What Veterinarians Recommend
Provide Fresh, Filtered Water
The AVMA recommends providing pets with filtered water changed at least twice daily. Stagnant water in bowls develops biofilm within 24 hours, even with treated municipal water.
Test Annually (or After Changes)
Test your water at least once a year, and again after any plumbing changes, municipal water quality alerts, or if your pet shows unexplained symptoms like excessive thirst, lethargy, or GI issues.
Know Your Breed's Sensitivities
Certain breeds (Bedlington Terriers, Dobermans, West Highland Terriers) have copper storage disease. Dalmatians are sensitive to high-mineral water. Research your breed's specific water quality needs.
Avoid Outdoor Water Sources
Puddles, ponds, and stagnant water can contain Leptospira, Giardia, blue-green algae toxins, and agricultural chemicals. Always bring clean water on walks and hikes with your pet.
