A countertop reverse osmosis unit and an under-sink system solve the same basic job in different ways. This guide compares the AquaTru Classic (countertop) and the APEC ROES-50 (under-sink), then adds a Clearly Filtered pitcher and a Sawyer SP129 squeeze filter for smaller or travel use. Hydrology University did not lab-test these products. Specs below are as listed by the makers and on our review pages; check the listing for today's price.
AquaTru Classic: countertop RO, no under-sink plumbing

AquaTru's Classic sits on the counter and uses a multi-stage reverse osmosis path without drilling into the sink. It suits renters and anyone who does not want an under-sink install. Our notes: AquaTru Classic review. Check today's price on Amazon: AquaTru Classic on Amazon (paid link).
APEC ROES-50: classic under-sink RO

APEC lists the ROES-50 as a 5-stage system rated at 50 gallons per day, with a 4-gallon pressurized tank, no electricity needed, a 4:1 drain ratio, a 1-year warranty with lifetime support, and Made in USA labeling. It needs under-sink space and a drain connection. Our full notes: APEC ROES-50 review. Check today's price on Amazon: APEC ROES-50 on Amazon (paid link).
How to choose between countertop and under-sink
- Rent or own. Countertop wins if you cannot modify plumbing.
- Daily volume. Under-sink tanks usually hold more ready water for cooking and filling bottles.
- Counter space. AquaTru uses counter area; APEC frees the counter but needs cabinet space.
- Test first. Know what is in your water before you pick a system. Our PFAS guide is a starting point for lab testing.

Pitcher option: Clearly Filtered

A pitcher is not reverse osmosis. It is a lower-commitment option for fridge water when you are not ready for an RO install. Our notes: Clearly Filtered pitcher review. Check today's price on Amazon: Clearly Filtered pitcher on Amazon (paid link).
Portable option: Sawyer SP129
For hiking, travel or emergency kits, a squeeze filter is a different tool. Sawyer lists the SP129 Squeeze Water Filtration System for portable use. Check today's price on Amazon: Sawyer SP129 on Amazon (paid link). Browse more gear in accessories reviews.
What the water experts recommend
- Match the form factor to your home. Countertop, under-sink, pitcher and portable each fit a different situation.
- Read maker filter schedules. Replacement timing matters more than a single purchase price.
- Consider a different starting point. Atmospheric water generators such as the WaterVO Spout Monolith make drinking water from humidity in the air instead of starting from the tap.
